Board of Trustees
Board of Trustees
The legal, financial and employment matters of the School are the responsibility of the Trustees, who are usually present or former parents.
The school is constituted under The Memorandum and Articles of Association which established the school as a ‘limited trust’ in 1947. The school is therefore a company limited by guarantee and the Trustees are its directors.
The school is also a registered charity and is subject to the provisions of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 including supervision by the Office of the Scottish Regulator (OSCR).

Chair of Trustees
Tobi Emonts-Holley
Chair of Trustees
Tobias studied Economics at the Universities of Stirling, Edinburgh and Strathclyde. Part of his PhD studies was tutoring undergraduate classes and he was also seconded by the Scottish Government to develop one of their economic policy modelling tools. Tobias has six children in the School / Kindergarten, Seedlings, with another one on the way. His wife went to the Bristol Steiner school as a child and took the teacher training course at ESS.
"What makes Edinburgh Steiner School relevant in the 21st Century is the more holistic approach that endeavours to understand each child as an individual. Upholding the Anthroposophical impulse and understanding of the human being is special in today’s world."
Tobias’s life and work at Tiphereth is rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy, which helps him understand the approach the School is taking to education. His own education and work gives him a varied skillset, ranging from academic research to business management and engaging with policy-makers.
Layla Tree
Trustee
Layla Tree
Trustee
Layla sits on the management board of the Collumcille Centre. Both Garvald and Columcille work out of the ideas of Rudolf Steiner. She is a former pupil (Kindergarten to Class 12) and a current parent.
As we enter a time where the automisation of skills is becoming the norm I think it is vital to maintain and nurture crafts, creative learning and freedom of play.
As a former pupil, Layla has a good knowledge and understanding of the School. Her professional career also works out of the ideas of Rudolf Steiner, which gives her an additional perspective to bring to the trustees.
I am passionate about growing the school through positive marketing and publicity and sit on the School’s marketing group of the Board.
Keir Bloomer
Trustee
Keir Bloomer
Trustee
In 2021 Keir was asked by the Government of Northern Ireland to lead an independent review of education in the province. The report was published in 2023 and is now influencing policy there. Among numerous other consultancy engagements, he was involved in the creation of Newlands Junior College, a school for young people disengaged from learning and have undertaken various pieces of work in southern Africa.
Keir is the Chair of the Commission on School Reform which is part of the think tank, Reform Scotland. At various times in the last decade, he has been Chair of the Court (Governing body) of Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, the Scottish Book Trust, the education committee of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Tapestry Partnership (a professional development organisation for teachers).
Keir’s granddaughter lives with them in term time so that she can attend Edinburgh Steiner School. She is now in Class 12.
ESS offers a humane and holistic educational experience for young people from early years through to the threshold of adulthood. Its curriculum builds the ability to make sense of complex and multi-disciplinary issues on firm subject foundations. It has particular strengths in the creative and performing arts. The ethos of the school is warm and friendly. It encourages the development of compassionate and well-rounded human beings.
Keir hopes his wealth and breadth of educational skills and experience will enrich the Board greatly.
I have extensive experience of the management of education systems, extending from early years to university. I have operated mainly at the level of chief officer but also have served on boards including as chair.
Leading an education system requires skills in strategic thinking, HR, budgeting, handling complaints, communication and persuasion. It also involves an understanding how learning takes place, the sign and delivery of the curriculum and how young people develop. The ability to seek consensus, make compromises but still adhere to principle are essential. I believe that my career has equipped me with these skills.

Dr. Iddo Oberski

Iddo’s children attended Edinburgh Steiner School for just under five years, during which time he became involved in a study group of Rudolf Steiner’s work, led by the late Karla Kiniger.
Since then he participated in many local and international Anthroposophical events and joined the trustees of Anthroposophy in Edinburgh, helping to organise and run local events.
In 2017 he completed the Edinburgh Steiner Teacher Education Course and has since been involved in teaching on that course, and more recently in redesigning it.
"Steiner Waldorf education is one of Steiner’s amazing gifts to humanity. Steiner had deep insights into the spiritual essence of the human being and designed the curriculum and teaching approach to support teachers in helping their pupils develop into moral and free individuals. We’re so lucky to have a Steiner School right here in Edinburgh.
I love how the education aims to foster young people’s holistic development, with a good balance between the cognitive, affective and physical domains. In our contemporary world of instant satisfaction, low attention span and addiction to devices and substances, we need to protect and equip young people with the ability to navigate life without losing themselves.
I have a reasonably in-depth knowledge and understanding of Steiner’s work as well as the challenges of communicating his work effectively to others. I also have experience of adult education, writing, problem-solving, and facilitating group processes. I hope some of this will prove useful in the future development of the school."

Lucila Machado

Lucila studied Law at University and due to the political climate in Brazil, gave up being a lawyer and became a Primary Teacher. This change led her to a second degree in Language and Literature. Once in the UK, after a long journey to recognise her teaching qualifications, Lucila was finally granted GTSE qualifications. When she came to Edinburgh she did the Edinburgh Steiner Teaching Course and became a Kindergarten Teacher.
After some years Lucila left the Kindergarten to study Human Biography and Development at Emerson College. After she qualified as a Biographical Counsellor Lucila did a Foundation Course in Systemic Therapy. She also attended the Mental Health Seminar and did the Post Graduate course in Anthroposophical Psychotherapy. Today Lucila works as a Psychotherapist in private practice.
"I taught at the Edinburgh Steiner School for 12 years and also helped to coordinate the Kindergarten for a while after I left. I nurture a deep love for the school. My years teaching here were wonderful. I met not only a good environment to work in, but a school for my children, friends for life and a community."
Lucila joined the Board of Trustees in September 2024. "I can offer a deep knowledge of Steiner education and the principles that guide and inform it. I have studied not only Steiner education, but also Anthroposophy and spiritual science. I feel able to uphold these principles and help to understand and support the Early Years at school."

David’s connection with Waldorf education is close to home:
"One of my brothers who lives in Germany sent his children to Steiner in Suttgart and on his recommendation, I followed suit sending my son James to Steiner in Edinburgh. He graduated in 2016. He always loved the school and still does. He now has joined the ESS staff, focusing on drama."
David endorses the Steiner Waldorf pedagogy as a relevant educational approach for young people today:
"Steiner teachers are clearly committed to delivering the full potential of pupils at the school. They focus on children as individuals emotionally as well as academically. This is a unique proposition when combined with an innovative curriculum that focuses on creative learning.
Children leave school with a relatively wide, informed perspective on life and a fuller understanding of the world we live in, allowing them to go forward with confidence in seeking to fulfil the ambitions and dreams of their youth.
In support of Waldorf education in Edinburgh’s capital, David brings close to forty years of vital expertise to the Board, who are responsible for the legal, financial and employment matters of the school:
"My studies of businesses as a long time investor and experience as a director hopefully allows me to help analyse and provide solutions to issues that confront the school, especially in a commercial and financial context .
Also, supported by my son ‘s association with the school, I hope I can help support the school and its teachers in continuing to deliver great outcomes for pupils both academically and as individuals."

Early Years education has a high profile in Steiner-Waldorf schools where practitioners have always been accorded equal status within the profession.
The work of teachers in a Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten is inspired by the wisdom and contemporary relevance of Rudolf Steiner’s educational philosophy and prepares children for the changing modern world. It is grounded in a specialist 3-year Steiner Waldorf Early Years Training Course. All those in the Early Years sector must have an accredited ‘full and relevant’ qualification recognised by SSSC or Education Scotland.

In most instances the same teacher will remain with their pupils from the start of formal education in Class 1 to the age of 14 years (Class 8).
It is the Class Teacher’s responsibility to bring each Main Lesson to the pupils in a vivid, pictorial way so that their imaginations are touched and their enthusiasm is fired. School trips expand and reinforce themes taught in Main Lessons.
More on: Pastoral Care.
Each Class also enjoys the experience of a wide range of specialist subject teachers on a daily basis.

Upper School Class Guardians
Upper School Class Guardian
Each class is assigned a Guardian who looks after their overall well-being throughout their time in the Upper School. He or she carries a deep knowledge of the Steiner curriculum, as it relates to the Upper School program, and guides the pupils knowledgeably through the crucial stages of adolescence.
The Guardian is many things: mentor, confessor, authority figure, bank manager, diary secretary, curriculum manager, go- between, arbiter, and trip organiser.
The ultimate aim of the Guardian is to evolve from manager and authority figure into partner; someone who works with an independent and self-motivated group of young adults to help them achieve their potential and contribute in a lasting and positive way to the school and wider community. The most fundamental definition of Steiner education is ‘education towards freedom’.
At any time, pupils can make a confidential appointment with Careers Guidance, meet with their Class Guardian or a member of the School’s Management Team to discuss any issues or concerns that they may have.

PTA
Parent Teacher Association
Children are more likely to thrive when there is a close relationship between home and school. Every Class in the School is composed of children who come together daily from a wide variety of families, homes and cultural and religious backgrounds. What we experience as a group is the Steiner Waldorf curriculum, as interpreted and presented to the pupils by their teachers.
Current PTA Initiatives
The PTA are focussing on two key projects over the coming months, identified as vitally important to enhancing the School:
New Parents and Access to University
PTA Member
All parents and/or carers of pupils and teachers attending the School are automatically a PTA Member.
ESS PTA Constitution
(Updated November, 2024 at AGM)
It is recognised that parental / carer participation in the educational process at ESS is foremost through supporting your child’s learning at home, which looks at education from a different standpoint to mainstream schools. We have only to look back to our own childhood to recall the important part that home life played in our own growth and development.
A well-directed Parent Teacher Association can strengthen the spirit of what makes this approach to education critically relevant in instilling a lifelong curiosity for learning, whilst equipping them to meet the ever-increasing array of social, political, economical and natural challenges.
Joining the PTA is one of the many ways parents are an engaged part of the school community. Other areas include being part of a PTA Working Group (such as the Friday Market, Extra Curricular Clubs), Trip volunteer, member of the Board of Trustees, contributing to the parent-led Christmas Market (the School’s largest annual fundraiser) and sitting on the Christmas Market Investment Group.
The PTA meet monthly, with the Minutes of each meeting made available to the wider PTA members (i.e. all parents / carers of enrolled pupils) here once approved. (Read here). Contact: pta@edinburghsteinerschool.org.uk
