10th Anniversary For Michaelmas Food Bank
September 24 2024
It will be a decade since our initial Michaelmas food bank collection at the beginning of October, as part of the first festival of the academic year. Over 1,400kg of items have been donated so far. This year, our Student Council are taking on the initiative, inviting peers, alumni and neighbours to collaborate.
A prepared look ahead to Thursday, 3rd October, when the School will mark its first festival of the academic year, Michaelmas. (Festival Programme)
For pupils who like to mark the occassion traditionally, it’s time to locate the red clothing and add a few philanthropic items to the grocery list. All Classes will be preparing for the event as part of their school day.
New families, this is a day all school pupils come together for lunch in the School Hall, complimentary of Edinburgh Steiner School. (An automatic credit note will be issued for all those who support Class 8’s Pizza Project, ordering the school lunches that day).
The ESS community donated 175.3kg of food in 2023, bringing the total to 1,415.3kg since it started donating nine years ago at Michaelmas in 2015. Over 20k emergency parcels were handed out in 2023; and some 15k have already been given in 2024. ESS will mark ten years collecting for the charity. The School’s Student Council have taken on the organisation of the annual initiative. A note from the Co-Chairs is below:
Edinburgh Food Project is a charity that runs seven food banks across the city. These food banks provide those in need with emergency provisions to cover three meals for three days. However, they are more than just food; they offer advice regarding housing and employment and a money advice service.
We are delighted to announce that we are working hand in hand with the Edinburgh Food Project to collect food donations during the Michaelmas Festival. This is a chance for the whole school to come together and support and appreciate the valuable work of this charity.
A Student Council representative will visit each Class and tell the children a little bit about the cause, as well as providing a box to collect the respective donations.
At the Michaelmas Festival, on 3rd October, we will create a beautiful display of the food collected and we can all reflect on our wonderful work.
Please donate what you can to help those in need over the winter months!
Many thanks on behalf of the Student Council,
Luca and Bella, Co-Chairs Student Council
